Is dogfighting still relevant today?

I keep hearing two totally different takes: (1) “dogfighting is dead, it’s all BVR missiles and sensors now,” and (2) “it’ll always come back when things get messy.”

I’m not military, just an aviation nerd who watches a lot of training footage and reads about modern jets. With stealth, datalinks, electronic warfare, and long-range missiles, does a close-in turning fight still matter in a real war? Or is it mostly for training/airshows now? I’m curious how often modern rules of engagement, countermeasures, terrain, jamming, or surprise actually push pilots into WVR.

Basically: if you were designing a modern air force, how much priority would you still put on classic dogfight skills and guns vs BVR skills, sensors, and teamwork?

Dogfighting has “died” and “returned” enough times that the pattern itself is the lesson. In WWI it was almost entirely visual; by late WWII it was still visual but increasingly about energy tactics, radar, and coordinated control. Then early Cold War thinking (guided missiles + radar) led some air forces to de-emphasize guns and WVR training—until Vietnam exposed the limits: identification problems, restrictive rules of engagement, unreliable early missiles, and the chaos of real engagements.

The historical takeaway is doctrine and technology swing like a pendulum. When identification can’t be guaranteed at range, when electronic warfare degrades sensors, when formations get mixed, or when multiple aircraft merge, WVR skills matter. Even if most kills are BVR in a given conflict, the cost of being unprepared for the merge is catastrophic.

If you design an air force, you prioritize BVR and networked tactics because they decide most engagements—while preserving a “last-ditch but critical” WVR competence. The past shows you don’t get to choose the kind of fight the enemy and the environment force on you.

BVR is awesome… until it isn’t. Jamming, bad ID, missiles missing, decoys, ROE, terrain, weather—then what? You just declare the fight over? No. The engagement keeps going, and pilots still have to solve it.

Also, the “dogfight” today isn’t 1960s gun-only. High off-boresight missiles + helmet cueing means the merge is faster and more lethal, which actually makes WVR competence MORE important, not less. If you can’t handle close-in timelines, you’re the one getting deleted.

Train BVR hard, sure. But any air force that treats WVR as optional is setting itself up for humiliating losses.

That said, the airspace won’t be clean. Mixed packages (manned + unmanned) and degraded networks can still force a WVR scenario. So WVR remains a contingency skill while the main effort shifts to distributed sensing and kill-chain speed.

If fighters can reliably sanitize the airspace BVR, ground forces get freedom of maneuver. But if the air picture turns into messy close-range engagements over the FEBA, then sorties get diverted, timing slips, and CAS/interdiction becomes less predictable.

So I’d frame it like combined arms risk management: you plan for BVR dominance to keep the tempo. But you still need WVR capability because the “gap” moments—when fighters are busy surviving a merge—are exactly when ground units get hit by enemy air or missiles. Even small failures in the air-to-air layer can ripple into ground losses.

Over water you get unique challenges: horizon limits, sea clutter, and the political risk of misidentification near civilian traffic. That can push fighters to closer ranges to confirm targets, even when they’d prefer BVR. Also, maritime strike environments often involve layered defenses—fighters, ship-based SAMs, EW—so the air picture can become compressed.

Modern naval aviation still trains for WVR because the carrier’s survivability depends on fighters being able to finish an intercept even if the long-range plan gets disrupted. BVR is the preferred solution, but naval fights are rarely “clean lab conditions.”

If an operation depends on helicopters, tiltrotors, tankers, or ISR platforms, then the fighters providing top cover need to be ready for whatever happens—BVR intercepts, but also sudden close-in engagements when aircraft converge over a time-sensitive target.

SOF missions also tend to happen in politically sensitive environments where ROE and ID are strict. That can push fighters closer. So even if the headline capability is BVR, having pilots who can handle WVR without losing the plot is a big deal for protecting the whole package.

I’m not a pilot, but I think about the “what if everything goes sideways” side.

Dogfighting skills matter in the same way land nav matters even with GPS: if your primary system is degraded, you fall back on fundamentals. In air combat that means visual acquisition, managing stress, keeping awareness, and not getting fixated.

Also, if things go wrong and someone ends up downed, the survivability chain depends on many factors—training, comms, and recovery planning. Air superiority reduces the odds of those worst days. So even if WVR is rare, being competent at it can prevent emergencies from happening in the first place.

Against a peer, both sides will contest the electromagnetic spectrum, try to degrade networks, and impose uncertainty—exactly the conditions that can force closer engagement. Against a weaker opponent with limited air defense, you may rarely see a classic dogfight because the opponent avoids air-to-air contact altogether.

Rules of engagement and coalition warfare are big drivers too. If you need positive ID, if airspace is crowded, or if there’s high risk of fratricide, pilots may have to close distance despite having BVR weapons. So dogfighting isn’t the “main plan,” but it remains relevant as an outcome of real-world constraints.

One practical angle: sustaining “dogfight readiness” isn’t free. WVR training burns flight hours, maintenance cycles, and requires range access, aggressor support, and instrumentation.

But the payoff is resilience. If your force only trains scripted BVR intercepts, you end up with brittle tactics that break under friction—EW, comm loss, navigation errors, or unexpected merges. A robust force budgets for both: networked warfare proficiency and the fundamentals to operate when the network is degraded.

From a logistics standpoint, you also need the right support: reliable ACMI/instrumentation pods (or equivalents), debrief systems, and realistic threat simulation. The debrief is where the value is extracted.

This is exactly what confuses me too. If missiles can hit from so far away, why would anyone ever get close enough to use a gun?

Is it mostly because you can’t always tell what the target is at long range? Or because jamming makes the radar picture messy? Also, do modern pilots still practice the same basic fighter maneuvers (like high yo-yo, scissors), or is it totally different now because of helmet missiles?

Strategically, you design to maximize first-look/first-shot/first-kill via sensors, stealth, and command/control. That reduces losses and preserves sorties for the broader campaign. But any model that removes WVR entirely usually overestimates kill certainty and underestimates friction: mis-ID, missile inventory limits, leakers, and multi-axis raids.

So the “right answer” is balance: optimize the kill chain for BVR, but maintain WVR proficiency as a hedge. The hedge is worth it because losing even a small number of high-end aircraft and pilots can have outsized operational and political effects.

Robotics is pushing two shifts: (1) unmanned wingmen that can take higher risk at closer ranges, and (2) decision aids that compress timelines—threat warnings, sensor fusion, automated countermeasure suggestions. That can reduce the cognitive load that used to make WVR so punishing.

But until autonomy and identification are trusted in messy airspace, humans will still face merges. So dogfighting skills remain relevant as the human fallback mode, while unmanned systems increasingly handle the riskiest geometry or act as “first in” sensors/shooters.
