I’m putting together a small “operations-style” hiking kit for solo day hikes and occasional overnights in black bear country (sometimes I’m near remote campsites with bad food-storage habits). I see a lot of confident claims online about bear spray being a magic off-switch, and other people saying it’s overhyped or useless in wind/rain. I’m not trying to be tough—I just want something practical.
How useful is bear spray in real life? What are the main limitations (wind, distance, temperature, expired canisters), and is it actually worth carrying vs. focusing on noise, food storage, and avoidance? I’m also curious if there’s a meaningful difference between “bear spray” and other pepper sprays. Not looking for legal advice, just field experience and general safety guidance.
