How useful are signal mirrors?

Putting together a small survival/field kit for day hikes and backcountry trips (mostly woods but sometimes open ridgelines and lakes). I see signal mirrors in a lot of “must-have” lists, but I’ve never used one outside of messing around with a compact mirror. Are they actually useful in real search-and-rescue situations, or is it one of those items that looks good on paper?

I’m trying to keep weight down, and I’m also thinking about “tactical” realities—like not wanting to broadcast your position unless you really need to. Any tips on when they make sense, how hard they are to use under stress, and what kind (glass, plastic, with a sighting hole) is worth buying?
