How much water should you carry outdoors?

Trying to dial in my water planning for day hikes and occasional weekend overnights. I’m in the Midwest, usually 60–85°F, some humidity, and I’ll do anything from a 2–3 mile walk to a 10–12 mile hike with a small pack. Sometimes I’m rucking with 25 lb just for conditioning.

I keep seeing “1 liter per hour” and also “just carry a couple bottles,” which is… not helpful. I don’t want to overpack water and make the hike miserable, but I also don’t want to run dry if I misjudge the pace or the heat.

What’s your rule of thumb for how much water to carry outdoors for a few different scenarios (short day hike, longer day hike, overnight)? And do you plan around refill points/filters or just carry everything? I’m looking for practical, real-world planning rather than a perfect formula.

If your expected time is, say, 4 hours, and your normal rate is around 0.5L/hr, that’s 2L. Now add a reserve (0.5–1L) so a slow buddy, a wrong turn, or heat spike doesn’t become a problem. That’s why 3L is a common “feels heavy but solves most problems” number for longer day outings.

For overnights, I’d rather carry capacity + filter than try to haul all the water like you’re an APC hauling jerrycans—unless you’re in a dry area with no sources.

- Heat, humidity, high effort, lots of sun exposure: it can be notably higher.

2) Decide if you’re “carry-only” or “carry + treat.”

- If you can’t confidently treat/refill, carry enough to finish plus a buffer.

- If you can treat, carry enough to reach the next reliable source, then top off.

3) Always have redundancy.

- Two containers (bladder + bottle), or two bottles.

- A treatment method (filter or chemical) if you might need to refill.

Scenario starting points (adjust to you):

- 1–2 hours: 1L

- 3–6 hours: 2–3L

- Overnight with reliable water: 2L carry + filter, and fill at camp

Avoid risky water sources, and when in doubt, turn around early. The best survival skill is not needing a rescue.

A solid middle ground is to standardize your kit (say, 2–3L capacity) and then vary how much you actually fill based on your confidence and refills. Over time you’ll build your own dataset.

And don’t ignore the human factor: if you’re hiking with others, someone else’s poor planning can become your problem. A small buffer is both self-preservation and team safety.

Think like a planner: consumption rate, storage, distribution points, and contingency.

On foot, distribution points are springs/streams/trailheads; storage is your containers; consumption is your personal rate. Define three states:

- Green: you have enough to finish with margin.

- Amber: you can finish only if nothing changes.

- Red: you must refill or abort.

Your goal is to avoid entering Amber early, because that’s where bad decisions happen (pushing past turn-around time, skipping rests, ignoring navigation errors).

So practically: start in Green by carrying a buffer, and set a “water trigger” like: if I’m below X liters at midpoint (or at a certain waypoint), I refill or turn back. It sounds nerdy, but it prevents optimism bias.

This works especially well when rucking because effort swings are bigger and you can’t always predict pace.
