I keep seeing clips and interviews where people talk about “operators” like they’ve all been in nonstop combat for years. I’m not military, just a civilian trying to understand what’s typical.
When someone makes it through selection and gets to a special operations unit, how much actual combat experience do they usually have at that point? Is it common that they’ve already deployed a lot in conventional units, or do many arrive with mostly training experience?
Also, I’m guessing it depends heavily on the time period (GWOT vs now) and the unit. I’m not looking for classified details—just a realistic, general picture of what “typical” looks like and why there’s such a range.
