I’m 24 and thinking seriously about joining (still figuring out which branch/role). I’m not totally out of shape, but I’m definitely not “military fit.” Right now I can jog a couple miles at an easy pace, do maybe 20 push-ups on a good set, and a few pull-ups if I’m fresh. I work a desk job and I’ve been inconsistent with training.
I keep seeing people online say it takes “a few weeks” or “a year,” which isn’t super helpful. I’m trying to set realistic expectations: how long does it usually take to get into military shape for basic training and the common entry fitness tests? And what does “military shape” actually mean—running only, or strength and rucking too?
Not asking for a secret program, just a realistic timeline and what milestones I should aim for before I talk to a recruiter or ship.
