I’m getting serious about preparing for selection (not trying to name a specific unit, just talking generally). I’m decent at running and rucking, but I’m not a big guy and my absolute strength numbers aren’t impressive. I can pass basic standards, but I’m nowhere near “powerlifter strong.”
How important is raw strength during selection compared to endurance and mental toughness? I keep hearing two totally different takes: 1) strength doesn’t matter, it’s all cardio and grit, and 2) if you’re not strong you’ll get destroyed on carries, kit, obstacles, and team events.
If you’ve been through similar pipelines or coached people, what kind of strength level is “enough,” and what movements matter most (deadlift, squats, presses, pull-ups, sandbags, etc.)? I’m trying to train smart and not get hurt.
