I keep hearing “situational awareness” thrown around in everything from basic fieldcraft videos to security/EDC talk, but I’m not sure what people mean beyond “pay attention.”

For context: I do weekend hikes and some camping, and I’m trying to build better habits (navigation, finding campsites before dark, not getting surprised by weather, etc.). I also work in a busy city and sometimes feel like I’m either hyper-alert (exhausting) or totally zoned out (bad).

So how important is situational awareness really, and what does it look like in practice? Is it something you can train without turning into a paranoid mess? Any drills or frameworks you’ve actually used?
