I’m trying to get more serious about survival and preparedness, and I keep seeing two extremes: “fitness is everything” vs “skills and gear matter more.” For context, I’m in my 30s, desk job, decent health but not athletic. I can hike a few miles with a light pack, but I get winded fast if there’s elevation or I’m carrying anything heavy.

My question is: how important is physical fitness in real survival situations (getting home after a disaster, multi-day hiking out, extreme weather, helping family, etc.)? What kind of fitness actually matters most—cardio, strength, flexibility, endurance, carrying capacity?
