I’m early in my career and I keep hearing two opposite takes: “the military is purely merit-based” vs “who you know matters more than what you know.” I’m not trying to game the system, but I do want to set myself up for good assignments, schools, and eventually promotion.
How important is networking in the military, really? What does “networking” look like in a professional/ethical way (mentors, recommendations, volunteering, etc.)? And how do you do it without coming off like you’re sucking up or playing politics? I’d appreciate perspectives from people in different communities (combat arms, aviation, intel, logistics, etc.).
