How important is adaptability in survival?

I’ve been trying to get more serious about survival skills (mostly weekend hikes, some winter camping, and building a basic “get home” kit). One thing I keep hearing is that adaptability is more important than any single skill or piece of gear.

I get the idea in theory, but in practice I’m not sure what it looks like. Like: is adaptability just “stay calm and improvise,” or is it something you can train like land nav or first aid? Also, how do you balance planning (checklists, redundancies, SOPs) with being flexible when the plan breaks?

Would love to hear perspectives—especially examples where adaptability was the difference between a bad day and a disaster. Not looking for anything reckless, just trying to build good habits.
