I’ve been reading more about modern naval conflicts and I keep seeing special operations forces mentioned alongside carriers, submarines, and missile ships. I get their value on land, but at sea it’s less obvious to me.
Are maritime SOF actually decisive, or are they mostly for niche missions like boarding or raids? In a high-end fight against a peer navy, do they matter compared to sensors, missiles, and submarines? I’m especially curious about things like ship takedowns, port infiltration, beach recon, and protecting sea lanes. Would love some grounded perspectives (history, real-world experience, tech, etc.).
