I’ve been reading more about modern armored warfare and it feels like everyone talks about tanks and IFVs, but scouts get less attention. With drones everywhere, satellites, and all the ISR tools, are dedicated scout vehicles still a big deal or are they kind of a leftover from older doctrines?
I’m thinking about stuff like the US cavalry roles, wheeled recon cars, light tracked recon, and even “scout variants” of IFVs. In a real fight today, what do scouts actually do that drones and dismounted recon can’t? And is it still worth spending money on dedicated scout vehicles versus just giving IFVs better sensors?
Curious to hear perspectives from history, current conflicts, and anyone who’s worked around recon units.
