I’m early in the process of looking at a military career (talking to a recruiter, reading job descriptions, trying to pick a path). One thing I keep hearing is “your evals follow you,” but I don’t really know what that means in day-to-day life.
How important are performance evaluations actually? Like, do they mainly matter for promotions, or do they affect what schools you can attend, assignments, reenlistment, or even how you’re treated in a unit? And if someone has a bad evaluation early on, can they recover from it later?
I’m not trying to game the system, just trying to understand what’s realistic so I don’t make dumb mistakes in my first couple years.
