I’m trying to get a realistic sense of how much languages matter for special operations. I’ve heard everything from “it’s mandatory and makes or breaks missions” to “you’ll always have an interpreter.”
Context: I’m not in yet, but I’m looking at SOF paths and I’m deciding whether to spend my limited free time grinding fitness, land nav, and general military knowledge, or starting a language (thinking Arabic or Russian, maybe Spanish since it’s more practical day-to-day).
For people who’ve been around the community: how important are language skills for operators in real deployments, training with partner forces, intel gathering, and everyday team life? Is it a nice-to-have, or does it actually change what jobs you get and how effective you are? Also curious if “basic conversational” is enough or if you need serious proficiency to matter.
