I’ve been reading more about special operations and I keep seeing mentions of K9 teams in raids, base security, and tracking missions. Some people talk like dogs are “mission critical,” others say they’re mostly a niche capability or even a liability if stealth is everything.
For those who know more: how important are K9 units in special operations today? What do they actually do that sensors and drones can’t, and where do they struggle (noise, heat, transport, risk to the dog/handler, etc.)? I’m not looking for anything operationally sensitive—just trying to understand the real value vs. the hype.
