I keep seeing helicopters described as “game changers,” but also hearing that modern air defenses make them too risky. I’m not military—just trying to understand how they actually fit today.

When people talk about modern warfare, is the helicopter still a core tool (air assault, medevac, close air support, recon), or is it becoming more of a niche asset compared to jets, artillery, and drones? I’m also curious what matters more: the helicopter itself (Apache/Black Hawk/Mi-8 types), the doctrine, or the threat environment (MANPADS, radar SAMs, EW).
