How important are heavy-lift helicopters?

I keep seeing heavy-lift helicopters (like CH-47 Chinook, CH-53, Mi-26, etc.) come up in news clips and documentaries, but they don’t get the same attention as fighters or drones. I’m trying to understand where they sit in the “must-have” category for a modern military.

Is heavy lift mainly about moving troops fast, or is it more about logistics (artillery, vehicles, ammo, fuel) when roads are bad or contested? And in a peer conflict with air defenses everywhere, are heavy-lift helicopters still worth the cost and risk, or are they becoming niche compared to trucks, tiltrotors, and unmanned resupply?

In most wargames/sim models, heavy-lift helicopters are disproportionately valuable because they create maneuver and sustainment edges in complex terrain—until air defense density crosses a threshold.

I usually treat them as a “windowed capability”: when friendly suppression/EW creates a corridor, heavy lift can rapidly shift combat power (artillery, air defense elements, engineer gear) to create local overmatch. When the corridor closes, you revert to ground logistics.

They’re also a hedge against infrastructure collapse. If bridges are down and rail is disrupted, a force with heavy vertical lift can still reposition key enablers and keep tempo.

So: essential if you plan for contested access and dynamic windows, less useful if your concept assumes constant permissive airspace.

Near term: unmanned ground vehicles can haul loads from a helicopter drop zone to dispersed teams, reducing how close the helo needs to get. That changes risk calculus—helo drops a pallet at a safer spot, robots do the last few kilometers.

Longer term: optionally crewed heavy-lift platforms could take on the most dangerous resupply flights, especially at night or in bad weather, with remote supervision. Not fully autonomous into contested airspace, but enough to reduce risk to crews.
