I keep seeing people online say guerrilla warfare is either “unstoppable” or “basically impossible now because of drones and surveillance.” I’m trying to get a more grounded take.

If a smaller force is fighting a modern army (satellites, drones, signals intel, armored vehicles, air support), how effective are modern guerrilla tactics really? I’m thinking ambushes, IED-style attacks, hit-and-run raids, blending into the population, attacks on supply lines, etc.

Do these tactics still work in 2026, or do ISR and precision strikes make it too hard? Also curious what actually decides success: terrain, outside support, politics, training, or something else.

Guerrilla tactics remain effective, but not because they “win battles.” They work because they shape the political outcome by making control expensive and time-consuming.
