I’m putting together a small “get home / emergency” kit for day hikes and short overnights. I’m not trying to play commando, but I realized I’ve never actually practiced signaling for help beyond “yell and hope.”

If I get turned around or injured and need rescue, what are the most reliable ways to signal—day and night—without relying on cell service? I’ve heard about signal mirrors, whistles, small fires, strobes, even ground symbols, but I don’t know what actually works in real life. Also: any common mistakes that make rescuers miss you?
