How do you navigate without GPS?

I’m trying to get better at land navigation because my phone GPS is unreliable where I hike (tree cover, dead zones, battery). I’m not training for anything official, just want a solid “military-style” approach that works when electronics fail.

If you had to move from point A to point B without GPS, what’s your step-by-step method? What do you carry (map type, compass, protractor, notebook)? How do you keep from drifting off azimuth, and what do you do at night or in bad weather?

I’m not looking for anything reckless—just safe, practical basics I can practice locally. Also curious what skills are actually worth drilling vs. what people overcomplicate.

If you want a “GPS-off” method that has survived centuries of warfare, it’s basically: orient yourself, set a direction, verify with terrain, and correct early.

Armies did this long before satellites: Roman surveyors relied on road networks, landmarks, and measured distances; Napoleonic forces used detailed topographic mapping as a weapon; and WWII/Cold War doctrine formalized map-reading and compass work because radios and vehicles failed under stress.

Practical process (and it’s timeless):

1) Identify your position with certainty (terrain features, grid reference if your map supports it).

2) Choose handrails and checkpoints (ridge lines, rivers, roads) like WWII patrol reports describe—don’t “dead reckon” the entire way if you can avoid it.

3) Use an aiming-off technique: deliberately aim slightly left/right of a linear feature so you know which way to turn when you hit it.

4) Keep a simple log: time, pace count, major features crossed. Old field manuals are full of this for a reason.

For reading, the classic U.S. Army land nav manuals (FM 3-25.26 and predecessors) are a good historical-and-practical bridge, and they show how doctrine matured from hard lessons.

Also, do you all actually count paces the whole time or just on certain legs? I feel like I lose count immediately when I’m tired.
