How do you maintain and care for helmets?

I recently picked up a used ballistic-style helmet (modern high-cut) and I’m trying to do the right thing with maintenance. It smells a bit like storage funk, the pads are dusty, and the chin strap hardware has some grime on it. I’m not looking to repaint it or do anything tacticool—just keep it clean, safe, and not ruin the materials. What’s the right way to clean the shell, pads, and straps, and how often do you inspect/replace things? Also, any storage tips (heat, sunlight, moisture) would help. I’m mostly using it for training classes and range days, not daily duty use.

As helmets become nodes in a wearable system (sensors, hearing protection, HUDs), maintenance trends toward “keep interfaces clean.” Dirt in rail slots, Velcro clogged with lint, and worn cable routing points cause more problems than a dirty shell.

If you run active hearing protection or helmet comms, treat the helmet like you would electronics-adjacent gear: avoid solvent sprays, avoid saturating anything, and do periodic checks for cable abrasion where it rubs.

Also: if you’re ever tempted to drill or permanently modify the shell for a new mount—don’t. Use purpose-built adapters. The future is modular for a reason, and you’ll preserve the helmet’s integrity and resale value.
