How do you maintain and care for hearing protection?

I’ve been trying to get more disciplined about caring for my hearing protection instead of just tossing it in a range bag. I run a mix of foam plugs for the range and electronic earmuffs for training days. After a long session (sweat, dust, sometimes light rain), the muffs feel grimy and the gel cups pick up lint. I also don’t know if I’m shortening the life of the electronics by leaving batteries in.

What’s your routine for maintaining and caring for hearing protection—cleaning, drying, storing, replacing ear seals/foam tips, and checking for a proper seal? Looking for practical habits that keep things sanitary and actually working when it matters.

For modern hearing protection, I’d borrow that doctrine mindset: (1) post-use wipe down, (2) scheduled inspection, (3) consumables replacement on a calendar, not only when it’s obviously broken. If the ear cushions don’t rebound, if the headband loses tension, or if the foam tips no longer expand properly, treat it like worn webbing—swap it. And if your hearing seems worse or you get persistent ringing after shooting, it’s worth seeing an audiologist rather than guessing.
