I’m trying to tighten up my outdoor habits because I’ve had a couple sketchy moments lately. I hike and do short overnights (mostly state forests), and last weekend I surprised a small black bear near a bend in the trail. It bolted, but it got my attention.
I’m not looking for “be fearless” advice—more like practical routines: how you move on trail, what you do around camp, food storage, when to back out, and how to avoid escalating anything. I also bring my dog sometimes (leashed), so tips for that are welcome too. What’s your approach to avoiding dangerous animal encounters before they happen?
