I’ve been reading a lot about special operations lately and I keep seeing “intel-driven operations” as the key. But it’s always vague. In practical terms, how do operators actually gather intelligence before a mission?

I’m not asking for anything classified or step-by-step instructions—more like the big buckets: what comes from people on the ground vs drones vs signals vs just good observation. Also, how much of it is gathered by the operators themselves versus analysts or other units feeding them? If you want a realistic mental model: “find, fix, finish, exploit, analyze” (often called F3EAD in public discussions) is a cycle. Operators are most visible in “finish/exploit,” but they’re plugged into the whole loop.
