I keep hearing two different takes: either special operations are meticulously planned down to the minute, or they’re mostly “commander’s intent + adapt on the fly.”

I’m not in the military—I’m just trying to understand what planning actually looks like for SOF missions in a realistic way (without getting into anything sensitive). Like, how deep do they go on contingencies, comms plans, medical, resupply, exfil, etc.? And how much of that detail is standardized vs. specific to the unit/mission?

If anyone can explain the general level of detail, what usually gets planned versus what gets left flexible, and why, I’d appreciate it.
