Could tanks become obsolete in future wars?

I keep seeing takes online saying “tanks are dead” because of cheap drones, top-attack missiles, and all the footage from recent conflicts. But then I also read that armored units still matter for breaking through, holding ground, and protecting infantry.

I’m not military, just a hobby reader (and a bit of a strategy-game nerd). If we’re looking 10–30 years out, could tanks actually become obsolete, or is it more like they’re evolving into a different role with more active protection, better sensors, and drone support? I’m curious what people here think from history, tech, and real-world experience.

“Obsolete” is a word historians learn to distrust. Cavalry didn’t vanish; it transformed. The tank itself was a response to trench warfare, and then it adapted through WWII into combined-arms maneuver. What changes in the drone/missile era is not the need to seize and hold ground, but the cost of exposure. Today, loitering munitions and persistent ISR compress the timeline between “seen” and “hit.”

Historically, the counter is doctrinal as much as technical: dispersion, camouflage, deception, smoke, electronic warfare, better air defense, and combined arms at lower echelons. If tanks become less concentrated and more networked, that’s not obsolescence—it’s another doctrinal cycle.

In training you get hammered on “don’t skyline yourself,” “don’t bunch up,” “don’t stay in the same spot,” and “talk to your adjacent units.” The modern battlefield just punishes mistakes faster.

I don’t think tanks go away. I think units that can’t integrate drones/EW, proper security, and air defense will keep paying for it. The tank is still a tool—leaders and combined arms decide whether it’s a scalpel or a liability.

If a force can’t provide air defense, EW, engineers, and competent tactics, then sure—tanks will look obsolete. But that’s not the tank’s fault. That’s a competence and doctrine problem.

Protection: hard-kill APS is becoming mandatory, not optional. Add layered top protection, better belly protection vs mines, and active counter-UAS measures. Signature: thermal discipline, exhaust management, decoys, and rapid multi-spectral smoke.

Integration: tanks need organic ISR (small drones), tight comms with infantry/IFVs, and immediate access to engineers and short-range air defense. In Ukraine you can see what happens when any one of those is missing.

I expect fewer massed “tank charges” and more distributed armored teams. The gun still matters for direct fire, especially in urban or complex terrain where standoff missiles and drones can be blocked or jammed.

Tanks are like surface combatants: expensive, visible, and valuable. That makes them priority targets. The answer isn’t to delete them; it’s to operate them with screening forces and defense in depth. For armor, that’s infantry screens, EW, air defense, engineers, and ISR.

Also worth noting: in limited wars, deterrence and political signaling matter. A capable armored force is still a very visible symbol of conventional power, like a carrier strike group—vulnerable, yes, but strategically relevant.

Air power affects whether tanks thrive or suffer. When one side has strong air superiority and good ISR, armor that moves in the open is in danger from aircraft, helos, and now drones. When air is contested and both sides have air defenses, tanks regain room to operate—because neither side can just loiter overhead freely.

Not an expert on tank tech, but I’ll add a “people” angle: even if tanks evolve or shrink in number, armored and mechanized specialties won’t vanish. Militaries still need crews, maintainers, and leaders who understand combined arms.

SOF won’t replace tanks, but they absolutely shape how tanks survive. A lot of tank losses come from being found, fixed, and then hit—SOF-style recon, target designation, and sabotage missions contribute to that kill chain.

On the flip side, when armor is supported properly, it can enable raids and isolations by punching through obstacles and providing protected firepower near the objective. In many operations, SOF loves having conventional heavy assets available, even if they’re not “sexy.”

If tanks look more cautious in the future, it’s because the battlefield is full of observers—drones, scouts, signals intel. Tanks will need better counter-recon and tighter security, not a funeral.

Fieldcraft matters more than people admit. A lot of “tank is obsolete” content basically assumes vehicles are always visible and always emitting. In reality, camouflage, concealment, movement discipline, and deception still buy survivability.

From an engineering/logistics viewpoint, tanks remain relevant because they solve a physical problem: crossing danger areas, breaching obstacles, and surviving direct fire while doing it. But they’re demanding.

If a force can’t sustain fuel, recovery, track maintenance, spare parts, and route clearance, tanks become stranded assets. I’m still learning this stuff, but I’m confused about one thing: if drones can hit the top of a tank, why wouldn’t armies just switch to lighter vehicles that are cheaper?

Is the main advantage that tanks can take small arms/fire and keep moving? Or is it the big gun for buildings and bunkers? Also, do active protection systems really stop drones or is that more for missiles?

In most plausible future scenarios, tanks don’t go obsolete—they become conditional assets whose value depends on the “transparency” of the battlefield. If both sides have persistent ISR and fast strike, heavy platforms must operate under concealment, deception, EW, and air defense to create local advantage.

Think in terms of windows: you suppress enemy sensors, jam links, create smoke, fix their shooters, then push armor to exploit quickly. Outside that window, tanks should be dispersed, hidden, and used sparingly.

Force structure wise, I could see fewer MBTs per brigade but more enablers: drones, counter-drone, EW, SHORAD, engineers, and precision fires. The tank remains the closer for certain missions, but it’s no longer the whole offense.

If anything becomes obsolete, it’s the assumption that the most dangerous job—driving the heaviest armor into the hottest zone—must be done by a human crew sitting inside it. Robotics will push us toward optionally manned or unmanned armored vehicles.

Picture a “manned command tank” staying slightly back while unmanned heavy platforms probe, breach, and draw fire, with sensor fusion feeding a shared picture. That reduces crew risk and lets designers change layouts (more armor up top, different ammo handling, modular mission packs).

So I don’t see “no more tanks.” I see “tanks plus robotic wingmen,” and the definition of a tank stretching into a family of armored systems rather than one iconic vehicle.
