I’ve been reading a lot about raids, hostage rescues, and “small footprint” deployments, and it made me wonder where the line really is.

Can special forces actually replace conventional troops for certain missions, or is that mostly a headline-driven idea? I get that SOF can do things regular units can’t, but sometimes it feels like people talk as if a handful of operators can do the job of a battalion if they’re “elite enough.”

I’m not in the military, just a civilian trying to understand how modern armies think about this. I’m especially curious about missions like counterinsurgency, advising partner forces, counterterror raids, securing key infrastructure, and reconnaissance. Are there missions where it makes sense to use SOF instead of conventional troops long-term, or is it always a tradeoff that creates other problems (coverage, holding ground, fatigue, politics, etc.)?

Historically, “elite troops replace the army” is a recurring fantasy that runs into the same wall: mass and endurance. From ancient peltasts and Roman auxilia to WWII commandos, the pattern is that specialists enable, disrupt, and shape—but they don’t substitute for the force that holds and administers.

Look at WWII: British Commandos and OSS/SOE teams were invaluable for raids, sabotage, and liaison with resistance, yet the liberation of Europe was decided by large conventional formations with logistics, artillery, engineers, and replacements. But once the mission becomes persistent presence, area security, population control, or defending against a peer mechanized force, the historical record is blunt: you need conventional troops and the systems behind them.

From an equipment angle, SOF can’t replace conventional troops because they’re built around different loadouts and sustainment assumptions.

SOF kit is optimized for small teams: comms stacks, night vision, suppressed weapons, breaching tools, medical, and niche stuff like climbing/boat infil gear. SOF can operate with a small support tail for short periods, but they still depend on the larger enterprise—airlift, depots, comms infrastructure, intelligence fusion, and extraction/MEDEVAC options. If the mission is “secure infrastructure” (power, ports, bridges), that’s inherently an engineering + security + sustainment problem.

So yes, SOF can do the initial seizure or recon of a site. Long-term security and functionality usually require conventional units and support elements.

This helps a lot, but I’m still trying to picture a concrete example. Like, if there’s a terrorist cell in a city, wouldn’t SOF just be better than regular infantry every time?

Is the main issue that SOF can do the raid, but then you still need regular troops/police to lock down the area and keep the cell from coming back? Also, how do commanders decide when a mission is “SOF appropriate” vs just training regular units to do it?

The sweet spot is a division of labor: conventional forces provide security, shaping, and staying power; SOF does deep recon, surgical direct action, and partner force development to reduce the burden on conventional units. Looking forward, robotics will blur some lines but won’t eliminate the need for conventional troops. Unmanned ground systems, better sensors, and loitering munitions can let small units control more space and reduce risk in raids or reconnaissance.

Exoskeletons and load-assist tech (if/when they mature) might extend small-team endurance, and autonomous resupply could shrink the logistics signature. That makes SOF-like employment more attractive in certain missions.

But even with robotics, you still have key constraints: numbers for presence, humans for decisions and interaction with civilians, and resilience under losses. Tech can help SOF scale effects, but replacing conventional troops wholesale would require scaling training, command structures, sustainment, and political control mechanisms—basically recreating conventional forces by another name.
