I’m trying to plan this like an adult and not just go off vibes. I’m in my mid-20s, working a civilian job (IT support) and I’m considering military service, but I don’t want to completely drop my civilian career if I can avoid it.
Is it realistic to combine military service with a civilian career long-term? I keep hearing “Guard/Reserve is one weekend a month” but then I also hear about schools, annual training, deployments, and surprise schedule conflicts. I’m also wondering how employers actually react, and whether some civilian careers mesh better than others.
If you’ve done it (or studied it), what’s the honest version: what works, what doesn’t, and what should I ask a recruiter or potential employer before I commit?
