I’m looking at enlisting and I keep seeing mixed answers online about whether you can actually pick your MOS/AFSC/rate (whatever the branch calls it) or if they just assign you something after basic. I’m not trying to “game the system,” I just want to make sure I don’t end up in a job I hate for years.
For context: I’m 19, finishing community college, decent fitness (not a PT monster yet), and I’m open to different branches. I’m interested in either something technical (comms/cyber/maintenance) or something more field-based, but I’d like to choose rather than roll the dice. If it matters, I’m also trying to set myself up for a career after I get out.
So how does it really work—can you choose your military occupation, and what affects whether you actually get it?
