I’ve been reading a lot about modern conflicts and it feels like “air superiority” is treated like the deciding factor every time. But then I also see examples where troops still hold ground or advance even when their air force isn’t present, or when the enemy has strong air defenses.

So in a realistic scenario today: can an army still fight effectively without air support (fighters/CAS/attack helos), or does it basically become a slow grind where you’re just waiting to get bombed? I’m not talking about a Hollywood “no planes at all” world—more like: your air assets are limited, grounded by weather, outnumbered, or kept back because of enemy SAMs. What changes in tactics, casualties, and the type of operations you can do?

The key lesson: without reliable air cover you lean harder on concealment, timing, night operations, deception, and layered ground-based fires. You can be effective, but you accept slower tempo and higher risk when moving and concentrating forces.
