I’m putting together a small “go bag” for weekend field training / hiking trips and I’m stuck on the food side. Standard MRE-style meals are easy to find and cheap in bulk, but I keep seeing “premium rations” (freeze-dried, higher-end retort meals, boutique “tactical” brands) that cost a lot more per meal.
My priorities are: reliable shelf life, decent calories, not wrecking my pack weight, and honestly… not hating life while eating it. I’m not prepping for anything extreme, just trying to be smart and comfortable on longer days.
For those who’ve used both: are premium rations actually worth the extra cost? What matters most—taste, nutrition, packaging, sodium, prep time, or just morale? And if you think standard rations are fine, what do you do to make them more tolerable in the field?
