I’m upgrading my pack for range days, weekend rucks, and a few longer hikes. I’ve been using a budget 35–40L pack and it’s “fine,” but the shoulder straps dig in when I add water and gear, the zippers feel sketchy, and it squeaks like crazy when it’s full. I’m looking at some premium options (think better fabric, framesheet, nicer harness) but it’s a big jump in price.
For those of you who’ve owned both: are premium backpacks actually worth paying extra for, or is it mostly branding? What should I look for that genuinely changes comfort and durability (frame, stitching, hardware, warranty, etc.)? And if the answer is “sometimes,” where’s the point of diminishing returns?
