Are IFVs replacing traditional APCs?

I’ve been reading up on modern mechanized infantry and I keep noticing that a lot of countries talk about IFVs like they’re the default, while “APC” sounds like an older category. I get the basic difference (IFV has more firepower, usually a cannon and AT weapons; APC is more of a protected transport), but in current conflicts it seems like everyone wants the extra guns and sensors.

So is the IFV basically replacing the traditional APC, or are APCs still the right tool for certain units and missions? I’m also wondering how much of this is doctrine vs budget vs survivability (mines/IEDs, drones, top-attack threats). Would love to hear how people see the trend playing out.

They’re not so much “replacing” as diverging into roles, and the argument has been looping since the Cold War. The APC lineage is basically the armored taxi: get infantry to the fight, then dismount. The IFV concept (BMP-1 is the big doctrinal pivot) tried to keep infantry fighting alongside armor with organic firepower. Soviet doctrine emphasized tempo and combined arms, so the IFV made sense in that system.

NATO varied: some armies leaned toward heavier IFVs as the anti-tank threat grew, while others retained more APC-like fleets for mobility and cost. Post-2003 and especially after widespread IED threats, many forces temporarily prioritized MRAPs and protected mobility over classic tracked APCs/IFVs.

Today, lessons from Ukraine and elsewhere are pushing a mix: high-end IFVs for peer fights, plus cheaper carriers and protected mobility for second-line tasks. History suggests “one vehicle to do it all” rarely sticks once budgets, attrition, and doctrine collide.

From a practical “what does the infantry actually carry” angle, the vehicle choice is partly driven by kit and sustainment. Modern squads are heavier: plates, comms, NODs, extra batteries, drones, anti-armor, plus water. An IFV can feel like the answer because it brings sensors, stabilization, and a bigger gun—so it’s not just a ride, it’s a weapons platform.

But that comes with tradeoffs: IFVs are expensive, complex, and usually have less “usable space” per troop once you factor in ammo stowage and turret intrusion. A more APC-like box can be better when you’re hauling a full load plus rucks, extra rounds, a litter, or mission-specific gear.

So I don’t see APCs dying. I see them shifting to roles where volume, simplicity, and reliability matter—while IFVs serve units that truly need organic direct fire on the move.

In training and real life, what mattered wasn’t the label on the vehicle, it was what the commander expected it to do—and what it could survive. If the plan is “roll up and fight mounted,” you want the stabilized gun, better optics, and generally better crew systems you find on an IFV. If the plan is “get there alive, dismount, and the infantry fights,” a simpler APC can make more sense.

Also: maintenance reality. The more complex the turret and fire control, the more you’re dealing with deadlined vehicles, parts, and specialist support. In a long deployment or high tempo, a fleet that’s 70% available but simpler can sometimes beat a fleet that’s 40% available but fancy.

What I see now is commanders wanting protection and situational awareness above everything. Whether that’s an IFV or an APC depends on budget and the mission set.

Classic distinctions still matter:

From a maritime perspective, the distinction shows up in amphibious operations and ship-to-shore constraints. Weight, deck space, and maintenance footprint matter a lot when you’re moving vehicles by landing craft or staging them on ships. A lighter APC-type vehicle can be easier to deploy in numbers.

Marine forces also care about what happens in the littorals: you might want protected mobility inland without carrying the full cost/weight of a heavy IFV, especially if the concept is to disperse and rely on fires from elsewhere.

So I don’t see APCs disappearing because strategic mobility still exists as a hard limit. The “best” vehicle in a vacuum can be the wrong vehicle once you put it on a ship and try to sustain it over distance.

Also, helicopters and drones make “popping up” targets more dangerous. Vehicles that can quickly detect and engage small aerial threats (or at least integrate with SHORAD and counter-UAS) gain value. IFVs often get better optics and stabilization, which helps—but they’re not dedicated air defense.

So whether IFVs replace APCs depends partly on how confident you are in controlling the air and providing fires from above.

Armies usually don’t swap an entire fleet overnight. They modernize in tranches, keep older APCs in training/reserve roles, and buy IFVs for frontline brigades first. So “are IFVs replacing APCs” can look true if you’re reading about top-tier units, but the broader force still uses plenty of APC-type vehicles.

If you’re thinking about enlisting, the best approach is to look at what brigades near you field and what MOS/role you want, because platform mix varies a lot by unit.

APCs can support that by being simpler transports that drop troops and relocate, reducing time exposed. IFVs can support it by providing overwatch with better optics and a cannon—if you’re disciplined about not parking in obvious spots.

So I’d say IFVs aren’t replacing the need for basic field skills and concealment. They change the options, but they don’t remove the fundamentals.

But if you optimize for mass, dispersion, and rapid replacement under attrition, you often end up with a tiered fleet: a smaller number of high-end IFVs for decisive tasks, backed by cheaper APCs/protected carriers for mobility, security, and follow-on echelons.

Given the current trend toward contested ISR and high loss rates, the “all-IFV” force can be brittle. A mixed approach tends to be more resilient in long campaigns.

One reason the APC/IFV line is blurring is remote turrets and optional manning. If you can put a stabilized weapon station, good thermal, and a small AI-assisted target tracker on a carrier without a full manned turret, you get some IFV-like effects at lower risk and potentially lower weight.

- Unmanned wingmen UGVs following mechanized formations (scouts, decoys, ammo carriers).

- Carriers that act as “motherships” for small drones.
